PacSun Pulls A$AP Rocky T-Shirts After Memorial Day Outrage?!?!*~

While the unexpected release of A$AP Rocky’s third album is sure to bring plenty of positive press and attention for the rapper, he is also being forced to endure a fair amount of negative publicity due to a T-shirt he has made available at PacSun. The controversy started at PacSun at Tanger Outlets in Foley, Alabama when a patron posted a picture of Rocky’s T-shirt which depicts an upside down American flag. Whether it was the image itself, or the fact that it was Memorial Day in the United States, many felt Rocky had desecrated the flag.

“I understand freedom of speech but this shirt, displayed prominently at the entrance of your store, for Memorial Day weekend is more distasteful and disrespectful than anything I thought I’d see,” Rachel Zawacki-Kuss wrote on the company’s Facebook page. “I will not be shopping at PacSun again.”

While the T-shirts have been sold for over a year, the Internet was quick to react yesterday with cries to #BoycottPacSun. According to, the U.S. Code of Laws states “the flag should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property.” In the past, Rocky has responded to the flag imagery being upside down by saying, “because our world is upside down. We’re just trying to be understood.”

“As a retailer grounded in youth culture, PacSun values artistic and creative expression through the brands that we sell in our stores,” the company said in a statement Monday night. “Out of respect for those who have put their lives on the line for our country, we have decided to stop selling the licensed flag t-shirt and are removing it from our stores and website immediately. We thank the men and women in uniform for their extraordinary service.”
